In her powerfully articulated book, Queer Phenomenology: Orientations, Objects, Others (2006), Sara Ahmed foregrounds the concept of orientation in the context of a new field of inquiry for both queer studies and phenomenological research. In her previous works, such as Difference Sara Ahmed's (2006) Queer Phenomenology starts from her reading of phenomenologists such as Husserl and Merleau‐Ponty to offer an understanding of the ways bodies are “shaped by their dwellings and take shape by dwelling” (p. 9), asking: “what would it mean for queer studies if we were to pose the question of ‘the orientation’ of ‘sexual orientation’ as a phenomenological question?” (p. 1). In her book Queer Phenomenology: Orientation, Objects, Others Ahmed states that orientation refers to the objects and others that we turn to face as well as the space that we inhabit, and how it is that we inhabit that space. Ahmed brings together queer phenomenology as a way of conveying that orientation is situated in the lived experience.
